Evaluation Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?
The masthead is one of the first things you look at when looking at a magazine, so clearly I had to make it stand out and attract my target audience. My masthead attracts my target audience as it is bright and modern, so they will automatically see it when looking at my magazine.
The photo I have used will attract the audience as fist of all it stands out from the white backgorund. Also the image is of a female model who looks around 17-18, so some of the audience may feel connected as they may be around the same age. They also may get attracted by what she is wearing as they may like it and want to know where it is from. As well as feel connected by the eye contact she is giving.
The cover line is attractive as it is bolder and brighter than others as it is red and the others are blue and black, also I have made it have a drop shadow so it stands out from all the other cover lines. I made it bigger so the audience can clearly see that it is the main coverline. The cover line is the name of the band which my artist used on the front cover is in. The audience will be attracted to this as they are a new band/artists so they will want to buy the magazine to find out more information about them.
The colours I have used will attract the audience as they are bright, primary modern colours which are quite eye catching, so will daw them to the magazine.
The cover line with "Win tickets to reading festival!" will be a very attractive to the target audience as they love festivals and music so will want the chance to be able to win a ticket and go with their friends.
The price being £1.99 is very attractive at a low price for such a high quality music magazine. It is not too exspensive or to cheap for anyone with in my target audience so they will be able to afford it.
The title of the contents page is in a similar style as my masthead on the cover this is attractive to the target audience as therte is a use of sinergy and they can clearly see which magazine this is.
The listing of the contents under the images will attract the audience as it is simple and a pretty minimal list with a line on each giving an insight of what the article is about.
The page numbers are big and bold and located next to article names so easy to see. This will attract my target audience as it allows them to easily and quickly flip to the page of the article they are interest in, instead of having to flick through the whole magazine searching for the artcle they want.
The simple colours will attract the audience on this contents page because I have used similar colours for this as I used for the cover and double page spread so they will see a clear link with one another. also the simple coloured background makes it easy to read the contents. Also the colours I have used in all of the pages can be associated with both males and females so this will also attract them.
The images used will also attract the target audience as first of all the main image is of the same model 'Raya-Leigh' which they have seen before so they will know who it is and also she looks very calm, young and relaxed looking directly at the camera so they will feel a connection and similarities beween them. Also the other featured images you see will attract the target audience as it is the logos of four main festivals and they will be interested in seeing what the line-ups are too them.
The image is very attractive to the target audience as it is a calm relaxing photo. also it a good quality close up so you can clearly see what the artist looks like, also the eye contact is very deep and emotionally engaging which will attract the readers/audience as they will feel connected and will be able to clearly see what she looks like as well as the image is visually stimulating.
The heading 'Raya-Leigh' is clear and bold with an white simple squared modern font so stands out in the red background aswell as the red against the white background. This will attract the target audience as it will be the first thing they see.
The flower head band used will attract the audience as it relates to festival fashion as it is what you seem most people wearing at festivals and girls may want to get one similar if they are going to a festival or just like it.
The article is broken in to two main parahgraphs which will attract the readers as it is not too much to read so they wont feel strained when reading it and there is not to many words so its easy to read. i have also included a featured article about popular indie bands and their new albums this will definatley attract the audience as they will most probably listen to their songs so will therefore want to read about them and their new albums.
Evaluation Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Evaluation question 3
by: Connor_t
by: Connor_t
Hi, I am the editor of Overtone music magazine and I believe
IPC Media Group will be the best media organization to distribute our media
magazine.
Hello, lots of other editors come to us with their media
products and there are many other media groups who are great suppliers, what
made you decide on choosing Ipc media group
First of all IPC
Media is the UK's leading consumer magazine and digital publisher, also With
more than 60 iconic media brands, IPC creates content for multiple platforms,
across print, online, mobile, tablets and events so our audience would be able
to look at our magazine where ever they go.
Yes, Carry on
You engage with 26 million UK adults and almost two thirds
of UK women and over 40% of UK men. Also you have an award winning portfolio of
websites which reaches over 25 million global users every month. So IPC clearly
have experience and already have are trusted by many readers, who I’m sure
would love Overtone magazine.
I see you have been conducting some research on our media
group.
Yes of course, I have
also further researched about your media brands under IPC. You already have a very successful music
magazine under your name NME, NME magazine covers a variety of music genre,
from indie, to pop. However we think overtone magazine is the perfect product
to cover a fixed genre of music which is indie. This includes indie-rock, pop
and folk. Therefore it will attract a specific indie audience which is massive
now a day, that may sometimes buy NME magazine but only when it features an
indie band, but with our magazine they will interested to buy every issue as it
is focused on indie music. As you know NME's success it’s gone further than
just a magazine, it has its own website NME.com, which was launched in 1996. It
is now the world's biggest standalone music site, with over 7 million users per
month. There is also the NME awards and store which is done through horizontal
integration. I think this could also be achieved with overtone.
What else do you think Overtone could achieve?
An app has also been created for the NME magazine, which
means the audience are able to read it on their travels. With the advantage of
horizontal integration and the latest technology, I am very sure that if our
music magazine is to join the IPC media group, we would be just as exceptional
as NME magazine. If Overtone magazine was to release a smart phone app, I would
be absolutely positive that it would be a popular product, as the target
audience are young adults aged between 16 and 25 as they will be able to read
the magazine wherever as they are usually busy and on the go. The majority of
the target audience would own at least one smart phone or tablet so an Overtone
app would pretty much be guaranteed to be popular. I would also like to publish
my music magazine every two weeks, I think it is much better as a month is too
long and a week is too frequent so every two weeks would be satisfactory.
Can I ask why you decided to choose Bauer media group over
other companies out there?
First of all, You Produce great trustworthy publications and
many readers buy magazines which are distributed form your organisation, so
they clearly trust IPC. Also IPC does not have a magazine that is specific in
the genre of indie, and that this genre of music is a gaining a mass amount of
popularity lately and will be even more recognizable and gaining more
popularity in the years to come. We consider Bauer media group, however they
already have two music magazines which are similar in ways to one another, so
thought IPC was the right one for us as I think there is a gap in IPC for
Overtone magazine. And also decided that Bauer media is not the company for
overtone magazine.
I would to like to thank you for your time, you did a great
presentation, I can ensure you that we will definitely be considering on
working and taking on your magazine.
Evaluation Question 1: In what ways does your product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
There are many similarities with Q's amagzine front cover and my magazine front cover. For example we have both used a Red boxed masthead and used what font for the masthead also they are both recognizable mastheads which means the readers are able to easily recognise the magazine. we both have plan white backgrounds which enables more room for cover lines. The main cover lines on both magazines stand out than the others, they are both covering the artist image on the cover and are a different colour to all the the other cover lines. also the both a speech from the artists for taglines. The cover images are similar in a way as well as, there is only one person form the band modeling on Q magazine and is showing their genre of music mainly through what he is wearing, whereas on my magazine, there is also one person featured from the band on my front cover and you can tell the genre of music through what she is wearing. Q amgazine has put its date and price with in the box of its barcode which is what magazinse usually do, however I have put them seperate by having the barcode on its own inthe bottom right corner and price and date with in the box of the masthead. Therefore I have challenged that and created my own way of laying them out. The above examples all use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products.
There are some similaraties wiht The Fly's magazine contents page and my own. Both contents pages have a similar lay out of the whole page with the contents under the image and title at the top with a clean simple background. Also both magazines have a smaller version of the masthead that would have previously been seen on the front cover, this allows the readers to still see the masthead and recognize the magazines when they read the contents page. however there is a contrast between the main images the moodel on The Fly is looking away form the camera where as mine is looking directly at the camera. But both of the models used on the contents are being passive. In addition, we both have a similar contents both layout and font, the numbers are bigger and bolder than the texts, howver the only difference is that I have put a red background behind my contents to break up all white space. The above examples all use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products.
There are lots of similarities between NME magazine double page spread and mine. We both have a similar layout to each other with the image on the left and the articles on the right. We have both put the artists name as the title of the article as well as put it in a boxed backgound in the colour of our colour scheme and bold text with an interesting font that is bigger than the rest of the text with in the article. we both also have a subheading with gives a feel of what the article is about. The layouts of the articles are similar as they are both divided into columns with a drop letter to enhance the text and a pull out quote to make it look more professional and break up the text. The above examples all use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

Double Page Spread progression
Here is my origional image I used for my double page spread,I began with this medium shot of the model who I have named 'Raya-Leigh'. She is wearing a flower band on her head a this fits in with the festivals I have featured in the magazine as you always see people wearing them at festivals. I used a greenery area to take this photo, so it sort of represents freedom and life. Her hair is blowing across her face making it look elegant and as if she is care free, which is what young people supposedly are.
First of all I have added a white box over the image for the background of the article. I then added the red box so that would be the background for the title, I made the title the same style as the masthead and the contents page title so you can see a flow of synergy. Also it contrast's and clearly stands out from the background and image. I put in the black circle with OT (Overtone) loves, because I saw it in my double page spread which I looked at and got inspiration from and thought it looked good and professional. I also started to add text for my article.
I have now started to add another side/ article about albums that everyone is talking about and included well known bands in the indie genre of music so that would attract my target audience as they are popular bands that they will most likely listen to and like. I have also added little images of them so it gives them something to look at as I know my target audience are people aged between 16 and 25 so they most likley prefer imagery also my research confirmed this. However the images do not detract attention from the main image.
I have just continued to finish of my side article and put in another popular indie band 'The Kooks' that I know will intrest my target audience. I have also added a red partition line to clearly deide the two articles.
As you can see I have completed the main article based on the exclusive interview with the Raya-Leigh about the effects of fame. I made the text black so you can clearly see it against the white background. I have put in a black pertition in between the texts so it devides it into shorter paragraphs. I have included in the article a pull out quote/ speech to mage it look more professional. Also I have completed the side article which includes information about their albums and where you can get it.
Here is my double page spead completed, I have just cleaned up all the edges ensured everything is place, neat and looks professional. Also I moved and made the title smaller as it was blocking some of the image.

Contents Page Progression
The contents shows what is inside the magazine, so I have came up with stories that relates to the genre of the magazine as well as will be intresting to my target audience. My research has helped me come up with stories thats my target audience would like.
I have added 3 images of the 4 main festival signs and added text above and below which says 'Line-ups this year...what we think' I did this because my target audience always want know who will be playing at the festivals and whether it looks good or not.
This is my completed contents page, I have ensured that there are no spelling mistakes and added a red background behind my contents to break down the white background as I thought there was to much white, also the black clearly contrast's with the black text.

Magazine Front Cover Progression
This is my first unfinalised attempt at making my music magazine cover, I like the layout of the text and the fonts used, however I have decided I dont like the picture I have used so when I next edit it, I will change the image as I think it is to dark and looks unproffesional. Also I an thinking of changing the name as I think it will look better and sound better as 'OVERTONE' as it flows more.
This coverline is bigger and bolder to the others to stand out, as it is the story which relates to the person on the cover as she is in the band called 'The Red Stripes'. I have also put it on a slant so you notice it first aswell as using different colours compared to the other coverlines.
As you can see I have changed the image to a clearer,
sleeker and one with a plain background as it is what I originally wanted to
have and relates to my Covers I have been looking at and got inspiration from,
also I think it looks more professional and modern. I used photoshop to put my masthead behind my image, this makes it look much more professional and realistic. My model used is wearing
more better and fashionable clothes which will attract the females in my target
audience as they will like what she is wearing. I have also changed the
Masthead name to Overtone, as I think it looks better as wells as flows more
when saying it. I have placed the main cover line over the top of the model as
it I want it to clearly show that the cover line is related to the image. I
have also changed the name of the name of the band to The Rebels because i
think it sounds better as well as relates to young adults more as they like to
think of themselves as being slightly rebellious.
I have started to add more cover lines, which relate to my genre, chosen target audience and social group...'UP COMING GIGS AND FESTIVALS' relates to my chosen target audience and social group as they are the main audience which go to festivals and gigs, so they will want to know which gigs and festivals are coming up as well as the dates and line up.
I have re-added the speech/editors box, but I have unboxed
it and just added black partition lines underneath every cover line to separate
and breakdown the cover lines and cover. I also added the barcode in the conventional
place, the bottom right corner so it is clear and easy to see however not in
the way or takes away any focus from the image or cover lines. More cover lines
have been added which shows more of the featured stories inside, which will interest
my target audience as they are articles which are related to the genre of the magazine
and feature big artists and social events.
Here is the Final and completed magazine cover, I have left no large white space, so the cover doesn't look blank and unfinished. I have added more instresting Cover lines to attract my target audience, such as 'win tickets to reading festival!' which in my research interveiw one questions was `What do you look for when you look/buy a music magazine?' and an answer was ' I look for intresting articles and interveiws about bands and artist like, I also like it if there is a chance to win something, such as a festival ticket'. So I have listened and used my reasearch to come up with coverlines which will attract my target audience and my target audience will be interested in. I have a blue, white, red and black colour scheme, which I found out were good colours to use when I did my interveiw with people who are with in my target audience. I also chose these colours as they are suitable for both males and females and look modern and professional.
Magazine Plan
The magazine genre I am going to base my magazine on is indie rock, so the content will be like gigs, events and festivals etc. Also I will feature music artists and albums.
I am aiming my magazine at boys and girls, teenagers to young adults so around 14-25.
Ideas for cover lines:
Ideas for cover lines:
- Up coming gigs and festivals
- Festivals and there line ups
- Artist and bands we reckon will be big this year
- Reviews: albums to buy or not to buy
The original title I came up with was… Ova-tone, however I changed it half way through creating my magazine, because I thought it sounded and looked better as Ovatone. I chose this because it relates to the term of music like the tone of a voice. Also I like the flow of the title and it sounds realistic. Other titles I had were; The High, Radar and Vibe. I rejected these titles cos I didn't think they suited my genre of magazine nor flowed as well as the one I have chosen.
The date I have chosen to publish this is Spring/summer as this is the time where most of the big events and festivals are happening, also summer is a time to get out of the house enjoy the outdoors as well as blaring out loud music! Also all the children are of school, so will be looking for something to do. My images and cover will be festival themed with grass, festival/indie clothes and will be of a young artist as my model etc. To fit in with the time of the year its being published as well as the genre of my magazine and to fit in with my target audience. I would like to publish my music magazine every two weeks, however I think it is much better as a month is too long
and a week is too frequent so every two weeks would be satisfactory.
The kind of image that will be on my front cover is going to be simple like my magazine front covers I have studied with a plain white background, it is going to be of a person, wearing indie fashionable clothes to relate to my magazine genre and I don't think I am going to use any props, because the magazines I have been looking at don't use any props. Also props will take up room and area for cover lines.
There is going to be one main image featured on my magazine contents page like the contents page out of The Fly as it is simple, effective and it looks professional and has a good layout. My double page spread will have one main image with a main story, with other featured images and articles on the side.

Magazine Research
Here are the questions I asked and the answers I recieved from the interviews I did with a few people who fit in to my target audience. I have interviewed a number of people who fit in my identified target audience and have questioned them of what articles and stories they like to see in the music magazines they read. This will inspire and influence the decisions I will make when it will come to making my magazine and to create a good product suitable for my target audience and will attract them.

Also that I will have images to look at as well as a fair a mount of text to read, and a coverline that says 'Win a ticket for......festival'. I will also definatley include information on bands and artist, like the killers and momford and sons.

Contents Page Inspiration
I looked at THE FLY magazine as it is Britains no.1music monthly magazine and its audience is similar to mine as well as covering similar stories as my magazine would do so. These content pages are from THE FLY magazine I like the way they are simple and have a big main image which takes up most of the page, therefore it makes it more stimulating to look at, Instead of loads of writing and numbers on the page. This is how I will layout my contents page as it is simple and effective and it is fairly unique to the normal convetions of cover pages and others I have looked at.
Double Page Inspiration
I looked at NME magazine because it is one of the most well known music magazines in Britain and it is a similar genre magazone to mine so I was able to look at what stories they cover and how they present and layout their double page spreads, so it will help me consider ways of laying out mine. These images are two double page spreads from NME magazine, I like the continued collour scheme of blue and white throughout the text and imagery, also I like the way they box out diffrent articles from the main text. They are both similar as they both have a main larger image and then partition of the writing, they also have other little extra images on the page to fill up space and make it look more interesting, so I will have to take more images to put on my double page to make it look more presentable and eye stimulating. Also on these double page spreads they have separate columns which have different articles in them so I may think about doing one of them to make it look professional as well as covering more stories to entertain.
